How to Have the Perfect Show--Tips and Tricks

By Gina C & Emilia L: How to combine an Art Show with a Music Performance

By Kathie W.

  1. When I decide on a place, I tell them that it will not only benefit my students to have their work shown, but it will also benefit that business.
    1. Banks
    2. Restaurants
    3. Libraries
    4. Colleges
    5. Bakeries
    6. Grocery stores

Just to name a few places.

  1. I use only blue putty which will not damage walls.
  2. I put a neatly printed name tag (the kind we use for YAM) with my name as the teacher.
  3. I mount the work or have the students incorporate a border into their pictures. It has to be quality work.
  4. I send home a letter to the students that actually have work that is going to hang up.
  5. At my school, we not only have connect ed., but the PTA does Facebook, Twitter and a Yahoo Group email system so I put it on that and a lot of times the families of children that don’t even have a picture hanging up will go. All the teachers and the administration also go.
  6. I put flyers about it on bulletin boards around the area.
  7. We have an “Opening” the first day it is hanging. I don’t have snacks or anything. I just take my camera and take pictures of the kids with their work.
  8. I make sure when it is hanging up that it is secure and I also give them my school and cell phone numbers in case they have a problem with anything hanging up.
  9. It is a win/win for businesses. I am taking down an art show we had at Taste Yogurt Bar on Lawndale today during my lunch. It was such a success the owner is opening it up to any art teacher that wants to display work.
  10. Sometimes they even give you a cut of the profits they make during the period you are hanging work.

I know a lot of you think Irving Park, well your kids can go to those places easily. Not so. We are a Title 1 school. Very little children from the neighborhood go to our school. It means so much to these kids almost all of them get to go at some point of the show. You just have to get out and beat the pavement to set it up. Banks are always really glad to do it.

I hold 2 exhibits at my school each year before the music program. I advertise in the school newsletter. I exhibit the 160 students who are on the stage. I hot glue the work onto the cinderblock……..it does not take the paint off the walls…if it does, I retouch with county white paint!

One time we used those Command strips and cut them into small pieces. They are expensive but cutting them smaller helps with the cost and they stick well to cinder block walls. We matted artwork by stapling art on black or white const. paper, then had the office print sticky labels for every student by grade (since they have the database). All hallways throughout main building had art on the walls. It is up temporarily so it was ok for firemarshall. We also coordinated with music teacher to have a time when students gathered to sing a couple songs, and acknowledge those parents and staff that helped. Snacks were provided (I forget by who, maybe PTA or store donation...just small cups of juice and fish crackers/ cookies in cups).

The center panel completes the exhibit with an original map from Cherokee Publications, showing where all the nations resided. The vibrate colors of the exhibit are eye-catching and the rich culture content will be appreciated by everyone. This exhibit truly opens the eyes of every viewer because the history is so close to home with American culture.
