Good news! The district has received its Race to the Top (RttT) funding of $9,942,458. In keeping with our strategic planning process, project teams comprised of school and district personnel, as well as student, parent and community representatives, will carry out the priorities indicated in our grant application.

 

Designed to encourage innovation and school improvement, RttT funds may only be spent on priorities identified by the State. The funding may be used through September, 2014.In keeping with State guidelines, GCS’ RttT application focused on five key areas:  Standards and Assessments; Data Systems to Improve Instruction; Teachers and Leaders; Turning Around Lowest-Achieving Schools; and, Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Each of these five areas aligns with priorities already identified in the district’s 2012 strategic plan, Achieving Educational Excellence.

 

For GCS, plans include expanding the district’s wireless capabilities to elementary schools,  strengthening professional development, supporting Mission Possible, improving eight of the district’s lowest performing schools, and providing more STEM opportunities for students, including the new early/middle college at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro recently approved by the Board of Education.

"MATHEMUSICIAN" VIDEOS HELP TEENS SEE MATH AS ART Recent college graduate Vi Hart is making a name for herself as a recreational mathemusician, who is hoping to help students see math as an art. She seems to be attracting more teenage girls to the subject.
